Your child complains about the workload at school (homework/classwork).
School is delicate balancing act of academics, socialization and fun. It is not uncommon for students to feel overwhelmed by the amount of schoolwork they receive on a daily basis. Poorly managing the daily expectations of academic rigors can lead to anxiety, frustration, slipping grades, and, in some cases, school refusal. Learning efficient organizational skills to manage homework is a valuable skill set that will improve students’ time management skills, self-esteem and overall academic success. It will also allow more free time for students to develop appropriate social skills.
Here are some important steps to take if your child is having difficulty managing their workload at school:
· Set aside a special time each day for their work. Try to make it earlier in the evening, or in the afternoon before supper.
· On the weekend, choose times when they are most alert.
· Help them set a goal to finish within a certain time limit. Then, set a beginning and end time.
· Do not leave assignments until the night before they are due, because they are unlikely to have access to the
supports they need to complete the assignment.
Also keep in mind:
· Have students gather everything they will need to complete their tasks. (Remember to include homework notebook or the assignment sheet given by the teacher.)
· Divide big assignments into smaller, more workable tasks.
· Set a time for each task. You can use a clock if you wish.
· Check calendar for due dates of assignments and fill in any new deadlines.
· Check homework notebook for work to be completed for the following day.
· Your student may want to work from a list and check it off as they complete each task. This gives a sense of accomplishment.
While homework can be challenging, learning efficient organizational skills and creating a good routine will help to decrease some of the stressors related to schoolwork. If you continue to have concerns about your child’s academics please contact their teacher to discuss what other options may be available.
